CyberPatriot
CyberPatriot Overview
CyberPatriot, the AFA’s flagship National Youth Cyber Education Program, inspires K-12 students to pursue careers in cybersecurity and other STEM disciplines. This initiative is key to shaping the next generation of leaders in fields critical to our nation’s security and technological advancement.
Local Access to CyberPatriot Programs
As a member of the Thunderbird AFA chapter, you will have direct access to these incredible CyberPatriot programs, which include:
1. National Youth Cyber Defense Competition At the heart of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. In this exciting competition, high school and middle school students form teams and step into the roles of IT professionals tasked with securing a small company’s network. Participants tackle real-world cybersecurity challenges by identifying and addressing vulnerabilities in virtual systems while keeping critical services online. The best teams win all-expenses-paid trips to the National Finals in Maryland, where they can earn national recognition and scholarship opportunities.
2. AFA CyberCamps AFA CyberCamps are an incredible summer experience designed to teach students the fundamentals of cybersecurity in a fun, hands-on way. These camps emphasize online safety and how students can protect themselves and their devices from cyber threats. The camps are tailored for all skill levels—beginner students will learn the basics, while advanced camps dive into more complex cybersecurity concepts. Thunderbird AFA chapter members will have access to these camps, making them an ideal way to gain valuable skills over the summer.
3. Elementary School Cyber Education Initiative The CyberPatriot Elementary School Cyber Education Initiative (ESCEI) is a set of free, downloadable modules designed for K-6 students. These interactive learning materials help young learners understand the importance of online safety and cybersecurity. As part of the Thunderbird AFA chapter, you can help bring this program into local classrooms or use it to teach your own children the basics of cybersecurity.
4. Cyber Education Literature Series In 2017, CyberPatriot launched the Cyber Education Literature Series, which includes books like Sarah the Cyber Hero—a pre-K reader designed to introduce younger children to the world of cybersecurity. These resources are available for purchase and can be used to introduce even the youngest learners to cybersecurity concepts. Thunderbird AFA chapter members can access these books and share them with local schools or libraries.
5. CyberGenerations CyberGenerations, the newest addition to the CyberPatriot program, focuses on helping senior citizens stay safe online. Through workshops and resources, seniors learn important topics such as password management, malware protection, and avoiding online scams. The Thunderbird AFA chapter is proud to offer this program locally, giving our community members the opportunity to protect older generations from growing cybersecurity threats.
6. Tech Caregivers Program Supporting CyberGenerations, the Tech Caregivers program provides training for students and adult volunteers to become certified “Tech Caregivers.” Volunteers are equipped to teach senior citizens basic cybersecurity practices and how to recognize online scams. As a Thunderbird AFA member, you can become a certified Tech Caregiver, helping to give back to the community while making a difference in the lives of older individuals.
