StellarXplorers
StellarXplorers Space STEM Program at Thunderbird AFA
The Thunderbird Chapter of the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) proudly offers exclusive access to the StellarXplorers Space STEM Program, which aims to inspire K-12 students to pursue careers in aerospace, aviation, and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. Through this initiative, students can gain valuable experience and skills while engaging in space system design competitions and hands-on learning.
As part of the Thunderbird AFA chapter, you’ll have access to these exciting opportunities that can shape the future of space exploration and technology.
StellarXplorers National Space Design Competition
The StellarXplorers National Space Design Competition is at the core of the StellarXplorers program. This unique competition offers teams of students a chance to work with advanced system simulation software, specifically Systems Tool Kit (STK), and provides an online textbook for reference. Throughout the competition, teams are given real-world space design challenges, such as orbit determination, satellite component selection, and launch vehicle planning.
The competition takes place in multiple rounds:
- Practice Rounds begin in October, where teams get familiar with the software and the challenges.
- Qualification Rounds start in November, and team performance during these rounds will determine which teams move on to the Semi-Finals in February.
- The top 10 teams from the Semi-Finals receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Finals, where they will compete for national recognition and potential scholarships.
By joining the Thunderbird AFA chapter, students gain direct access to this prestigious competition, providing an excellent opportunity to develop real-world skills in space system design and to connect with professionals in the field.
StellarCamp
StellarCamp is a fun and educational space system design camp open to students in grades 6 through 12. No prior experience is necessary—StellarCamp serves as a great introduction to space system design concepts and tools. During this immersive 5-day camp, participants learn the basics of space design, culminating in a practice competition on the final day.
While participation in StellarCamp is not a requirement for joining the StellarXplorers National Space Design Competition, it’s an excellent way for new participants to familiarize themselves with STK and space design concepts, making it easier to dive into the competition when the school year begins. Additionally, those who participate in StellarCamp are not obligated to join StellarXplorers in the following competition season, though many students choose to continue their involvement due to the skills and excitement gained.
As a member of the Thunderbird AFA chapter, students have access to StellarCamp and can take advantage of this exciting opportunity to explore the world of space system design.
